Electric violins are something of an underground instrument in Brisbane, you won’t see electric violins much in any of brisbane orchestras, but rest assured they are favoured much by gigging musicians, those wanting to practice quietly in apartment complexes and the curious looking to take a traditional instrument into the modern world. You see a few electric violins for sale in Brisbanes’s music shops, and if your lucky you’ll find a sales person that is knowledgable about them as well.

- Violin Pickups Overview
Electric violins are a truly versatile instrument they can be played in outdoor environments and noisy pubs where a purely acoustic instrument might be not be heard, or quietly at home through headphones. With the added utility of effects pedals an electric violin can sound like a whole orchestra, a cello, a shredding guitar or give that big concert hall sound in an outdoor wedding, with appropriate effects pedals.
There is a multitude of ways to electrify a violin, each with their own ‘sweet spot’ depending on the sound you are after, your budget and where you are wanting to play it. These range from body mounted microphones, retro fitted pickups, builtin pickups, acoustic, semi-acoustic and purely electric only violins.
Along this spectrum is the typical natural sound of a violin…to a funky instrument that sounds closer to an electric guitar in its own right.
Having performed and experimented with with a variety of electric violins over the years, together with my electrical engineering background I have a pretty good idea about how they produce their nuances of sound and what might work for the sound many players are after. In truth though if you are new to electric violins, it might take some time to iterate to the sound you like. At this point many people jump in with a pickup based solution…and go from there. Semi acoustic instruments offer a middle ground and then its onto the purely electric instruments that truly offer something quite novel (and largely immune to feedback in noisy rock bands).
I have quite a few electric violin options to explore. Come on by and discuss your needs.
