Looking for a secondhand violin? they sound as good as new ones and at a fraction of the high street prices why not, especially if they have been fully serviced and upgraded where necessary. Violins are meant to be played after all – not hiding in a Brisbane cup board!. i usually have good quality 4/4/, 3/4, 1/2 and smaller sizes on hand.
Violins are an engineering marvel and once a few years of rosin dust is removed, bumps, scratches and chips cleaned up, pegs and fine tuners lubed and the odd minor repair they are ready for another student to like and appreciate them.
In a world of fast moving consumerism violins and strings are great counter culture. They not only take a long time to learn and master but are also something that is made to last…and often handed down through generations.
As my children, both boisterous boys, have grown through the various sizes of instruments I’ve had the job of minor repairs, restringing and servicing. It helps I have a close friend as a luthier to learn some of the finer aspects there as well.
With violins, the tone develops with age, secondhand can be better than new and easier on the pocket too ( unless of course it’s a Strad). I’m usually working on a few violins at a time ready for another family to start their violin journey…so drop me a line.
Picking up a second hand instrument on facebook or the back fence, you might be the third of 4th family to own it. It might be getting a bit tired and almost unplayable, or worse have a problem just waiting to appear.
All my preloved violins have been serviced and are in sound condition with new or near new strings and come with bow & case and I have shoulder pads if you need one. I fit strings that match the instrument and can also supply spare strings, a new bow upgrade (brazilwood and carbon fibre) and have a small stock of new violins too. The upcycled violins I have are reputable brands that are sold in Brisbane’s Violin and music shops. I generally offer them for 40-60% of the new price (often I can accept trades as well). I ask a bit more than what you might see them for on facebook as I set them up ready for playing again. Mostly I have beginner and intermediate instruments available in sizes from 1/2, 3/4 and 4/4
