Cello Servicing with FiddlerDan
A cello is more than just wood and strings, its a delicate balance of structure that needs to be maintained to sound great . Over time, all cellos need care to stay healthy, responsive, and sounding their best, i suggest yearly, or when you notice something isn’t working properly. I work with students, teachers, and professional players across Brisbane to ensure every instrument is performing at its peak.
Why Servicing Matters
Changes in humidity, temperature, and daily wear can affect bridges, soundposts, strings, and seams. bridges too without constant attention can warp. Regular servicing catches small issues before they become bigger problems, preserving both sound and the life of your cello.
What I Can Look After in a Service
1. Bridge Work
The bridge is central to tone. I check its height, alignment, and stability, adjusting or replacing it if needed.

2. Soundpost Adjustment
The soundpost acts as the “soul” of the cello, transmitting vibrations from the strings to the body. Its position dramatically affects tone and responsiveness.

3. Strings, Fingerboard & Setup
I can replace worn strings (good string generally lose their tone after a year or so) , check pegs, fine tuners, and the nut. For more advanced players i can plane the fingerboard if needed to remove grooves or unevenness.
4. Seams & Cracks
Seams can open and cracks can form due to climate or knocks especially here in Queensland. I repair them carefully before they become bigger issues and keep your cello sounding great.

5. Bow Rehairing
A bow with old or broken hair won’t produce consistent tone. I rehair bows and inspect the stick, tip, and screw to ensure smooth performance.
6. Final Check & a Polish if you need it
I do a last inspection of setup, tone, and responsiveness. A light polish, sealing over chips can extend the life and look of a cello significantly.
How Often Should You Service?
Most players benefit from an annual service. Professionals or daily players may need more frequent attention. Think of it like a car service—prevention is better than repair.
Between Services
- Wipe down after each use to remove rosin and sweat.
- Loosen bow hair after playing.
- Store in a padded hard case in a stable environment.
- Avoid direct heat, cold, or sudden humidity changes.
A Final Note
A well-serviced cello is a joy to play. From bridges to soundposts, strings to seams, careful maintenance helps your instrument sing with warmth, clarity, and balance. If your cello hasn’t had a check-up recently—or if something feels off—bring it by for a professional service or advice about a niggle or something you notice.
