Close to the Gold Coast I see a lot of visitors for violin repairs and other string instrument repairs and some violin sales too.
Over the years there have been a few Gold Coast violin shops come and go …. remembering Vibrato Violin and a few others. Sometimes I’ve picked up their surplus stock..we like to help each other out. With a wealth of private and public schools with string programmes there is a real need and the work of local string studios and a few generalist music stores meets many of the needs, apart from more string specialty repairs.
Based on the Southside of Brisbane I’m less than an hour up the road from the Gold Coast for many and being close to the gateway motorway make for an easy drive. Thus I see a steady stream of people coming to visit me from the gold coast region for string and violin repairs and restorations (and a few sales as well). I also get quite a few from the Northern Rivers region of NSW from the likes of the Tweed valley, Byron and as far south as Yamba and beyond. As its a bit of a drive, what I try to do with my clients is if they have some shopping to do or are prepared to make a day of it I try to schedule in enough time to do the repair before they head back south (if its not too complex) and am flexible about seeing them out of hours as well . Sometimes i have even sent them home with glue clamps on their violins. Other times I might post them back their instrument, or they have a friend pick it up for them. Whatever works I reckon.
