The violin’s sound post sits just behind the bridge on the treble side. Often called the soul of the violin, its placement plays a structural role, as well as in shaping the instrument’s tone, projection, and responsiveness. Even the smallest movement—just a few millimetres—can dramatically change the sound, power or sweetness of the violin.

A sound post is fitted through the f-hole and must be cut precisely to match the inside surfaces of both the top and bottom plates, which are sloped. This delicate process ensures a perfect fit, creating a mechanical-acoustic connection that transfers vibrations effectively. If the post is too tight, it can strain the instrument; too loose, and it won’t carry the sound properly.

As violins age, they often go through several sound posts. The most common tasks I handle include:
- Fitting a brand-new sound post
- Retrieving a fallen post rattling around inside the instrument
- Adjusting the post’s position or length to optimise tone (most factory violins come with a sound post that is too tight)
