7/8 Violins

7/8 violin

7/8 Violins are the name given to violins between 3/4 and 4/4 size. The 7/8 violin is not a very common size today as most people transition fro 3/4 to 4/4 without a problem. However for those with smaller hands or arms that can greatly enhance player comfort and playability.

Sometimes this can be remedied by

  • using a full size violin and thining the fingerboard or neck to suit a player after al other options have been exhausted.
    • custom fitting a shoulder pad and chin rest to optimise to the biomechanics of the player.

I’m fortunate to have quite a few older European instruments that are a bit shorter then todays 4/4. This is because back then violins weren’t as standardised as they are today, and people tended to be shorter as well….happy days.

In fact you will see many older instruments are fitted with neck grafts to extend the size of those instruments o todays standardised 4/4 length**.

Anyways if your after a 7/8 violin reach out as I may be able to help fit you to a 4/4 violin, modify a 4/4 violin for you or  can see if i have any 7/8 violins floating about the workshop

** Fun fact, there are more than a few violins floating about with fake neck grafts on them (and other fake repairs), this is one way to make an instrument look older than it is and thus inflate its value….
