I’m Dan a long time parent at HPSS, I’ve seen both my kids through the strings program at Holland Park State School (both soon to be both at high school). I’ve been a violin player for over 30 years an as an engineer always interested in how they work.
Since my boys started learning, I’ve been learning about fixing up violins (and they certainly kept me busy) from a luthier friend, its grown to fixing violins for friends and over COVID grew some more again. With the closure of most music shops on the southside (Music Express and Massons Music) I’ve hung my shingle out in Mansfield as Fiddler Dan’s Violins & Workshop as something a bit closer than a cross river run.
So if you are looking for a violin size upgrade over the break I have preloved and new violin instruments available. I usually offer secondhand instruments that are serviced to work and sound like new, or better as violins develop with age, for around 50% of the new price. Often I can accept trade ins and if you have broken instruments I like to use them for parts to get a violin ready for the next family. I also carry parts that wear out like strings, bows, bridges and do repairs and servicing as well.
